Starting at age 3 it is recommended that all individuals have an eye health exam on an annual basis. During the medical evaluation, we measure the intraocular pressures for glaucoma, check for cataracts, and do visual field testing to determine the neurological integrity of the retina. At the time of the examination it may be recommended that the eyes be dilated as well. If you have children visit our web page on childrens eye exams and learn why eye examinations are important for children.
The refractive status of the eye will also be evaluated. This includes testing for nearsightedness, presbyopia and astigmatism. Additionally, we will test for the muscle balance and focusing abilities of the eye.
At this point, the results of the examination are discussed with the patient and a determination is made as to wether glasses or contact lenses best fit the patient's needs. If contact lenses are prescribed additional testing is necessary.
Contact lenses do not ride on the eye, they lie on a layer of tears. One of the most important measurements we take is of the tear composition-quanitity as well as quality. It is important the patient has the proper tears to support wearing contact lenses.

It is essential we measure the curvature and topography of the cornea prior to designing the contact lenses. We will also measure corneal thickness, which is followed over time to ensure the cornea remains healthy while wearing contact lenses. We will observe the patients blinking patterns to ensure proper tear circulation on the surface of the eye. These are the factors that are important for the proper contact lens selection.

The results of these additional examinations will be discussed with you in depth and the type of contact lenses that best fits your needs will be determined.
